Dust pollution

Particles of dust or other impurities that have settled on the wet paint and become trapped in it while drying. Visible as small raised dots on the surface of the coating, each particle forms a distinctive button with a shadow around it.

Dust pollution

Cause

Vehicle preparation
  • Inadequate cleaning of the car before painting - dust and dust from hard-to-reach places
  • Sanding residues remaining on the substrate
  • Fibers from the edges of paper or masking tape
  • No use of a cloth to remove dust immediately before application
Cabin and equipment
  • Contaminated base coat
  • Clogged ceiling or exhaust filters in the spray booth
  • Cabin pressure too low - dust rises instead of being discharged
  • Inadequate ceiling filters or old, failing air ducts
  • Contaminated floor, air ducts and cabin walls
  • Inadequate maintenance of the compressed air system
During application
  • Work clothes made of fibers that fray - release dust during work
  • Excessive movement around the car while painting - disrupts air flow and raises dust
  • Electrostatic charges attract dust - especially with aluminum and plastics
  • Unnecessary sudden movements in the spray booth

Prevention

Preparation
  • Wash the vehicle before starting the repair process
  • Thoroughly clean the area around the repair - holes, wheel arches, hard-to-reach places
  • When dry grinding, always use extraction devices and clean thoroughly after sanding
  • When wet sanding, do not allow the residue to dry - clean it immediately
  • Use good quality masking paper and tape with the smooth side on top
App
  • Use an antistatic cloth to remove dust immediately before application
  • Use paint strainers to filter the paint before pouring into the gun
  • Work clothes should be clean, free of fibers - preferably nylon or antistatic
  • Avoid unnecessary movements and walking in the cabin while painting
  • Use antistatic cleaner and grounding to remove static electricity
  • Keep the air hose to the gun away from the floor while painting
  • After painting, hang up the cable - do not drop it on the floor
Cabin maintenance
  • Regularly check and replace filters in the spray booth
  • Regularly clean the cabin - floor, walls, air ducts
  • Regularly check the compressed air system
  • Maintain proper cabin pressure
  • Use appropriate filters: ceiling and exhaust filters

Repair

  • Fresh paint - Small dust particles can be removed with a needle or small pin while the paint is still wet
  • Dried varnish with minor contamination - sanding with fine paper and polishing
  • Large particles or deep-seated dirt - sand the substrate and repaint from the top layer
