Coating

Cracking

A network of small cracks appearing in the paint system after some time. The depth of the cracks indicates where the source of the problem lies - superficial scratches in the clear coat are a different problem than cracks that extend into the primer.

Cracking

Cause

  • Applying a new system to a substrate that was already cracked - the varnish inherits the cracks in the substrate
  • Poor mixing ratio - too much hardener or thinner causes brittle, inflexible layers
  • Clear coat applied on too thick a base layer - lack of flexibility in a system that is too thick
  • Too thick top layer - thick layers crack under the influence of temperature changes and stresses
  • There is no elasticity additive for plastic elements - the plastic works and bends, the stiff varnish cracks
  • Adding layers to an old system without removing it - the increasing thickness leads to cracks
  • Primers not mixed sufficiently before use

Prevention

  • Carefully check the condition of the substrate - remove cracked substrates before applying a new system
  • Mix the ingredients in the right proportion using a scale and measuring cup
  • Mix or shake primers before use
  • Do not apply more material than recommended in the technical data sheet
  • Use the correct spray pressure
  • Always use a system with 2K elasticizing additive for plastic elements
  • Do not paint with subsequent layers without assessing the condition of the existing system

Repair

  • Completely remove the cracked system - do not cover the cracks with subsequent layers
  • Sand to a smooth, healthy surface
  • Identify and eliminate the cause before reapplication
  • Rebuild the system from scratch according to the technical data sheet
  • Use the 2K flexible system for plastic elements
